Woman Gives Birth To Baby Girl In Car After Getting Pulled Over For Speeding
WAVERLY, Ohio - Debbie Richmond drove away from a Tuesday-morning traffic stop as a mother.
Debbie Richmond said that she knew she was in labor at about 4 a.m. Tuesday morning and asked her mother to drive her husband, Randall Altman, and herself to the hospital, 10TV’s Kevin Landers reported.
“I was doubled over in pain, and I said, ‘We need to go now,’” Richmond said.
Richmond’s mother, Donna Richmond, said that she hit the gas pedal. “I knew I was going fast, I didn’t know I was going that fast,” Donna Richmond said. “She said I was going 90 miles an hour.”
The family was pulled over for speeding and were given a warning, Landers reported.
“I kind of just screamed, ‘I’m in labor,’ and mom said, ‘Can I drive 60 miles per hour?’ (The trooper) said, ‘I can’t tell you that,’” Debbie Richmond said.
The traffic stop delayed the Richmonds just enough that Debbie’s daughter, Sarah Lynn Altman, was born in the front seat of Debbie Richmond’s Hyundai. “I was holding my legs together,” Debbie Richmond said. “She just popped right out. No pain medication or nothing.”
Father Randall Altman said he sat in the backseat of the car trying to keep it together, Landers reported. “I was worried,” Altman said. “I was freaking out.”
The family said that they were relieved when they heard the baby start to scream, Landers reported.
Debbie Richmond and baby Sarah were recovering at Mount Carmel West Hospital on Tuesday.
“I’m going to write that one in the baby book,” Debbie Richmond said.
According to family members, Altman’s parents hit a deer and totaled their car on the way to the meet the family at the hospital. Altman’s parents were uninjured in the crash.
