My parents descend from villages of Tatar Cossacks and Bashkirs, both being Turkic nations native to Orenburg and Bashkortostan regions of modern Russia. My mother decided to pursue a higher education to become an electrical engineer, so she left the village to settle in Orenburg – a city which is situated on the border of Europe and Asia. So I belong to the first urban generation in our family.
My grandfather insisted that I should go to school where my native Tatar language is taught, but that was a mistake, because the school was fairly weak for my talents, and my peers hated me for being not like them. Ironically, the school didn’t even accomplish the initial goal – despite my passion for foreign languages, I never learned nor liked my native language, because it was initially taught as a native language.
Later I decided to transfer to lyceum, and it made a great impact on my personality and future aspirations. Even before I began my education in this school I already had a great experience with its tutors of English and French and fell in love with foreign languages. That was the first time I ever read or watched something in English (and never stopped since) and the first time I’ve seen a foreigner – a US teacher from Ohio. I’m somewhat ashamed I didn’t know English well enough to properly speak with her back then, but she was a great inspiration both that summer and later when she came to congratulate us on our graduation day.
The school itself also had a positive effect. When people around you are talented, motivated and are striving to do their best, you can’t help but do the same. Here I seriously considered a possibility of scientific career for the first time. Selecting a math-oriented class, purchasing a computer and discovering programming by making modifications for a videogame also contributed to this decision. It was amazing to discover how much freedom you can have in controlling what the machine does. So I waited for our programming classes with enthusiasm, and nearly managed to ace my graduation informatics test.
I am very happy about my choice of field. I feel a great satisfaction when my complicated programs work properly, especially programs which appear to be intelligent. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw numbers in squares moving around and miraculously ordering themselves in a 15 puzzle, even though I wrote and tested it by my own hands. Seeing points on the plane group in clusters according to OPTICS algorithm was no less exciting, especially seeing clusters evolve as you go through hierarchy levels. I liked this program so much that I wrote a graphical representation of reachability-plot and connections between points to see which point was reached out of which. I also calculated formal parameters of clustering quality for different hierarchy levels and was pleased to discover that the best results were achieved on levels which indeed appear to be compact on the plane.
Unfortunately, my years from 14-th onwards were not only the time I was getting much better and happier in education, they were, and still are, the time of severe conflict and unhappiness in personal life. I started to suspect that I was gay in high school. With all the hostility people expressed towards homosexuals, combined with religiousness my previous school imposed on me, it’s no wonder I was in denial. It took me several years to accept myself and realize how irrational I was, but as a result I was cruelly disillusioned. Apostates and homosexuals are not tolerated in Islam (even though Tatar Islam is quite mild compared to Middle East fanatics), and in time I only found more and more reasons to mistrust people.
Before long I realized that the country I live in is an authoritarian state halfway towards its self-destruction. Now no less than 90% of Russian citizens are brainwashed by TV into believing that by occupying Crimea we saved it from fascists. Propaganda, xenophobia and hysteria were already high, but after these events they skyrocketed. It is hard to concentrate on work, however interesting it is, when you can’t trust people and must resort to lies and hypocrisy to maintain relationships. Still, I managed to stifle my isolation and depression by immersing myself into work, and it yielded impressive results.
I love programming, but I couldn’t help but dream of doing it in a less hostile environment. I’m tired of lying and worrying that at any moment something that will ruin my life may happen, be it my country going completely insane or my views on politics, religion or homosexuality leaking out to law enforcement authorities or someone I know in person.
So I considered studying abroad for a while and participated in study programs and conferences in Japan and Germany along the way. When I was there, I couldn’t help but notice that a certain extent of tension is present between us, Russian students, and the accepting side. Most people in our group were influenced by propaganda, which was noticeable despite the lack of open conflict. Our Head of International Programs Department even believes the possibility of such conflict to be the reason why we barely had any opportunities at all to talk with German students. So I really want to show people of other countries, especially those in academia, that we are not all xenophobes and militarists, that there are other Russian people who oppose this insanity and injustice.
I want to prove everyone and myself that I can be a valuable member of society, that I have a right to exist. And I believe that becoming a scientist and advancing the forefront of human knowledge (especially in such an exciting and revolutionary area as Computer Science) is the most fitting way for me to achieve that. I have not given up yet.

П. Statement of Purpose.

Wow! =0
